ABOUT WEST 9 DESIGN
Welcome to West 9 Design Jewelry Workshop in Southeastern Colorado in a town called Pueblo. Located in a shopping center known as the Pueblo Trading Post at 1153 South Prairie Avenue, Pueblo, Colorado 81005. West 9 Design Jewelry is located in Space C-13 inside the main shopping center.
HOW THE WEST 9 DESIGN JEWELRY JOURNEY BEGAN
In November of 2012 I purchased 3 blouses with very unique colors. Since I could not seem to find any jewelry to match, I decided to try my hand at designing something I could wear with them. In December I found the right color of beads but did not like the design they were in. It was too "generic", so I separated the stones and put them aside. On January 1, 2013, I decided to try my hand at putting everything together and my Jewelry Design Business was started.
THE BIRTH OF WEST 9 DESIGN JEWELRY
The Designing was easy, but the sale was heartbreaking. I made several Custom pieces then proudly wore them out with Friends. I sold them before I left for home that evening. I went home and turned out several more pieces then wore them out again. As before, I sold them before I got to fully enjoy them. Thus started the journey I am currently on. My Friends liked what I designed and requested colors and designs to match their clothes. This was easier as it allowed me to keep some of my earlier designs for my personal use.
THE NAMING OF WEST 9 DESIGN JEWELRY
I spent many, many hours trying to come up with a name for my growing business. My Father was my biggest supporter when he found out what I was doing with all of my spare time. As he sat with me one day while I was ordering more product, he told me I needed a "catchy" name to go by. For several months I tried one name then another but none of them were truly "ME". At this time the main "Workshop" was located in the lower level of my home. This home is out in the country and has a variety of wildlife close by. In the mid 60's my parents purchased this property from the older couple who were "moving to town". My Mother always called it the "West 9" because it was 9/10 of 1 acre.
Since my name, Mardona, came from the blending of my parent's names, Don & Margaret, I thought of incorporating it into the Business name. Several more weeks went by as I would sit and stare at the windmill my father placed in the pasture for my mother while I worked on the current design on the workbench. One sunny afternoon I went to my father and told him of the latest name I had thought of. As a Tribute to my Mother & Father I wanted to name the Jewelry Business for them too. Thus, WEST 9 DESIGN JEWELRY was born. The barbed wire on the business cards borders the name much as the barbed wire on the fence surrounding the "West 9" property does.
THE SHOP OF WEST 9 DESIGN JEWELRY
In August of 2013, I went with friends to the Pueblo Trading Post since it is the only Flea Market close to my home. I thought it might be a good idea to sell more of the designs I had crafted. We toured the inside of the Pueblo Trading Post that Sunday. After the first weekend, I went home and made more items for sale. The second weekend was a little hotter, so I made the decision to rent a spot inside the Pueblo Trading Post building. Next came the work of designing the Shop and putting up doors and moving my products in. I shared this Shop with my next-door neighbor from home for a couple months then he decided not to sell his hand-crafted wooden toys any longer. I was left with a lot more open area than I had originally anticipated but it was soon filled with Handmade Jewelry.
For almost 8 years I have driven 99 miles (from my front door to the front door of the Pueblo Trading Post) every weekend rain snow and shine. Now you can find me at the Shop on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The "hall" my Shop is located in is only open those 3 days so I take advantage of all the hours I can spend there. Prices are kept low so now EVERYONE can enjoy making their own Jewelry.
I am always available to help with your designing questions. Although I am not an "expert" by any means (I am constantly finding easier and more efficient ways to design items) I can answer many of your beading questions and help you make your items more unique. Classes for beginners will start soon.
